Oh, we must have just missed it. She was acting a little off this morning, ornery but still manageable. I hoped that was a good sign, but nothing was going on, so we went to Mass. When we got home, she greeted us from the field, still apparently normal. So we went in and had lunch. After lunch, we went cat hunting and egg collecting and then I climbed the fence and hiked out to check on Maybelle again. The first clue was the red smear down the back of her udder, but I hoped we hadn’t missed it. I walked more slowly, more quietly and she stepped between me and the furry little lump I suddenly noticed in the grass. The new calf! Oh! How sweet! It must have happened just moments before, for I watched the little calf struggle to its feet for the first time, and I watched it take its first steps, and she’d been on the ground, Maybelle was, only a few minutes before. But we missed it! Ah, well, birthing is a private thing anyway, I suppose.
Wanna see a picture? Mother and…we don’t know yet.

Wow! Congratulations. Sorry you missed it, though. She was probably waiting until you were gone! lol
Keep us posted.
What a beautiful picture! So sweet. I hope it’s not cold?
How exciting! If I remember, you had Sunday in the bet. What does the winning guess get you?
It’s a GIRL baby. We got them up into the barn because it is COLD out there and the little thing is shivering. Maybelle did NOT want to move. We probably should have left well enough along, but I sure do feel better having them up out of the wind.
I did have Sunday, Jenny, and sadly, it gets me nothing but bragging rights.
But she’s a GIRL, which means she’s a keeper. A boy would have been dinner.
Aww she is very cute. I’m glad you got a girl…more milk for the family and yep she’s definitely a keeper! In no time she’ll be ready for breeding
I’m glad everything went well. I hear what you mean by the wind and it being chilly. Today it has finally warmed into the 70′s down here and boy am I glad for the sunshine! Just be glad you’re down in Kentucky and not in mid-Virginia. I have a friend who’s right smack in the middle of the latest winter blizzard! Blessings to you all…and before I forget, Merry Christmas!!!
It’s in the Canticle of Daniel: “….. and all you new calfs, bless the Lord.” So there you go… even our farm animals bless the Lord by their presence in our lives. Congratulations. dt
Oh, they do, Deacon Tom. They truly do!
Yay, a girl! Congratulations to Maybelle.
Congratulations! Thanks for the picture.
They are beautiful. Glad you got them inside.
Daddy called you Grandma – does that make me Great Grandma?
Love you all and congratulations on a safe birth.
Nope. I’m too young to be a grandma. Maybe an aunt.
Oh, what a great Christmas gift!:) They are both beautiful….she’ll be a good Mama.
Oh good – I was worried there for a minute. You see – I AM TOO YOUNG TO BE A GREAT GRANDMA. (The great referrs to age of course!)
yay! congrats!
Well, I’m glad I decided to get online and check out my favorite blogs for a minute! I’m up in Minnesota visiting my husband’s family for Christmas leave, so I really might have missed this post if I hadn’t decided to jump on for a minute.
She’s a pretty baby, and thank goodness she’s a heifer! Did you guys pick out a name for her yet?
Oh my, when I read the post title I thought you were talking about YOU! hehe…
Wow, I was catching up, and that farmer that said she was a week away from giving birth was right on, huh?!
Too funny, Mel. And he was spot on. His MIL says he’s just like that.
