Last week, our neighbor stopped in to chat. He looked at our cow. “Looks like she’ll have her calf in another two weeks.” I know he knows cows, but other folks say there’s no reliable way to tell. I’m not sure those other folks are right, though, because the same neighbor stopped by yesterday, too. He looked at the cow. “She’s gonna have that calf before another week,” he said. Well, I wasn’t expecting that calf till closer to New Year’s, but if he says it’s time, it’s probably time. I’m as nervous as if it was my own baby.
Looking for something?

Oh, I wish we could come see the calf being born! Here’s hoping the baby is born on a nice day, without power outages and ice!
Ha! Though I don’t she’ll care about the electricity.
I just hope she comes up to the barn. It’s gonna be a cold week!
There’s really not too much of a way to tell with any kind of accuracy when a calf will be born (unless it’s within 24 hours. Then there are several tell-tale signs). Of course if she’s close to her due date, your neighbor is probably right that the calf will be here before the week is out anyhow. And if I know livestock, it’ll be born on the nastiest night ever, in the wettest most disgusting corner of the field, and everything will be just fine.
(OK, maybe that’s just MY livestock who love to do that kind of thing!) Crossing fingers for a heifer!
Wow – that soon.
I hope she comes up to the barn also. Perhaps you will have to make sure she does.
Love you all,
Mommy
i have heard, but yet to witness, that a calf birth is really amazing! i hope yours is too and that both baby and mamma will be healthy and safe!
how fun!!! I love babies
I pick Sunday when you are at Church.
Davey grabbed Saturday before I could, so I’ve got Sunday.
I think if she was that close to calving, though, we’d notice before we left, and I don’t think God would mind if we missed Mass for that!
You know what I’d love, sweet Jennie? I’d love to see some pictures of these neighbors…of that pregnant cow…of your handsome soldier on a tractor. What can I say? I’m visual!
So post more photos, s’il vous plait.
With all your free time.
Well I’d love to take you some pictures, Maggie, but my camera is fading fast. Also, with my hands usually full of 40lbs of water or feed or a pitchfork full of manure, I just forget to carry it.
I’m really strong, though!
